There is an internal mythology to the show, that they are very aware of it. So good on them for "relaunching" under a new premise so effectively. Which was a good thing, because they had totally concluded the premise that started the show. Shit really hits the fan, and you get, in my opinion the best version of Supernatural. When they FIRST introduced Misha as a new mainstay of the show, this was perhaps the best period of the show ever. There is a few amazingly good seasons in there. I mean they really work, its funny when its funny, and the two actors seem to be having a blast which is always a good thing.

well i don't want to spoil it, but much like Buffy, who do you fight after defeating heaven and hell and every kind of ultimate evil out there? This is really the biggest issue I have with it, there used to be a time when facing a Ghost was a real challenge.

And so we get a lot of repeated plot arcs. Now that might be a good thing, unfortunately it doesn't seem to really know what story its trying to tell. But the later seasons its gone far closer to Buffy. It started as a Ghost of the week, semi realistic, horror tale. And after so many seasons, the overall plot line is Schizophrenic at best, never really knowing what kind of story its supposed to tell. Liking Buffy is the really the closest show to it. That said, Seasons 6+ still have a handful of great episodes, so do what you will with the post Season 5 material. The show doesn't really get too cheesy until Season 6 comes around and the show starts repeating plot beats, the main characters start making the same mistakes over and over, and the show basically throws the mythology and continuity out the window. However, Seasons 1 and 2 are more often case of the week than mythology episodes, but they're rarely boring. And since there's really only 2-5 main characters on the show at a time, the characters get a lot of development (though that development has been largely ignored in recent seasons). It tells a complete story (it was originally intended to end with the Season 5 finale) and has some of the deepest mythology/strongest continuity of any show you'll see. If you like classic rock, a really deep mythology, and fun, fully-fleshed out characters (and you're not put off by cases of the week, a la Buffy), then you'll love the first five seasons of the show.
